I use sewist online but seamstress in person, if i said sewist in my little country town i would have to constantly explain and i don't have the mental energy for that😅

I hate it when someone asks if I’m a “sewer”. Nope… we don’t live in the city. We have a septic system! I’m a seamstress, or I sew… not a sewer.

Sewist. I sew, mend, build costumes and embroidery. I also do art creation, beading, jewelry building, paint, design covered boxes, and a few other things. Yeah, Sewist. 🙂

Lol most people who ask what I do need a list of terms. I sometimes have to go all the way to saying what I sew before they understand what I'm talking about.

I like "home sewist" because I'm not skilled enough yet to claim seamstress and I like that it's more neutral and includes men who sew too. When I was in the military (US), there were a lot of men who did sewing and made side income doing patches and uniform alterations!

Seamstress. I'm female and go by she/her pronouns, and I like that the word is gender-affirming. I don't sew to sell, so I don't want to use a word that sounds exclusively professional.

I purposely save the last slivers of my bar soaps to do this with. Same size as chalk, just have to make sure it doesn’t gunk up the machine.

Nice idea. But, can she open the zipper enough to put the dress on?

I dunno what the top looks like, but (if possible) might be able to add a suspender or crossbody-type shoulder harness under your outfit, wide at the shoulders, narrow along the body, take the weight off your waist and spread the weight evenly across your torso? Could also make a foam "bustle" around the waist (like those French hips bustles) that create a gentle frame to keep the "bell" shape, so the weight is pulled outward instead of straight down? And good shoes. Strong, solid shoes. Your feet are gonna feel this more than the rest of you after awhile! Dunno... I do a LOT of accessibility-related tweaks around the house and with costumes.. and able-bodied folk move much differently than us wheelie-users!

The biggest problem is finding that exact lace/fabric, unless you want to hand embroider the whole thing.

How about a $20.00 white dress ordered from Montgomery Wards. No alterations and just celebrated our 55th anniversary! I've done alterations on Wedding gowns as a gift to the bride and groom. I didn't realize how expensive a gift I was giving!

Marla,The Dress Doctor from Calif. Love the girl math. I owned a large bridal salon in the '80s. So many brides thought that since they purchased the gown from me , that equaled free alterations. Lol can you believe how much a gown should/would've cost for the bride who's dress fit perfectly? It's called,"Bridal brain". I'm now doing my 4th generation of brides. Been at it since 1968. Keep up the great content.❤🎉
